Certainly, Tajik sportsmen (and women) have won quite a few medals in Olympic games under the realm of the Soviet Union. But Rasul Baqiev's bronze was our first ever Olympic medal won since the independence.

Noticeably, Rasul beat his host Si Rijigawa of China to progress to the semi-finals and secure a medal.

Congratulations ! Fantastic work for a country of only 7 million people to get any Olympic Medal :)

I am curious how are the Uzbeks doing in terms of medals with a much larger population  ...

God bless Tajikistan!

Uzbekistan also won a medal in medal in Judo but their's was men's 60k.

http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/JU/C93/JU0000000.shtml

Tajikistan's was men's 73kg.

So Tajikistan > Uzbekistan :D

Although the guy that won it for Uzbekistan looks Tajik not Uzbek, so really

Tajikistan: 2 medals in Judo.

Uzbekistan: 0 :D

I think there are 5 olympians from afghanistan.  I  know one of them who is participating in martial arts contest.  he is a hazara guy, his brother is my friend.

I reckon there are couple of tajik as well.

Thanks Unity. I just found out that there are actually four Olympians - not five.

Uzbekistan has also sent Tajik athletes to the olympic games. Between 9 and 10o´clock hoorshid (h=Kh) Tajibeav or Hajibeav? had a box match against a Turk from Germany. Uzbekistan won the match in 9 rounds and Germany won only 2 rounds. it seems all Ubekistan´s athletes are from Bukhara.

You are right, dear Khurasanzad. Many famous people in Uzbekistan (also sportsmen) are ethnic Tajiks. Especially Tajiks of Qashqadaryo and Surkhondaryo regions (most of population of these regions are Tajiks) are very strong and brave.

If olympics committee approves  "suicide bombing" as a qualified sport in olympic games, Pashtuns from Afghanistan and Pakistan would be the gold, silver and bronze medalists. :D

Exactly the same. They got one bronze as well.
Tajikistan is the 32nd country in the Olympic chart. But it can either roll down or move up the ladder later.
