Pakistani security forces have killed at least five insurgents loyal to Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud in a shootout in southern port city of Karachi.

Police sources said on Saturday the gunfight broke out after law enforcers raided a militant hideout.

"Our officers ordered the militants, who were 12 according to our information, to surrender, but they opened fire in response. In retaliatory fire, five of them were killed," deputy police chief Zafar Bukhari said. "The rest managed to escape."

Security personnel recovered heavy weapons and ammunitions from the militants' site.

The militants reportedly belonged to Mehsud's terrorist network and were planning attacks across the country's largest and ethnically-divided city.

Mehsud, a warlord in his late 30s, has claimed responsibility for dozens of devastating attacks on both civilians and security forces.

The developments come as the Pakistani military is preparing to mount an all-out assault on pro-Taliban militants in the South Waziristan tribal region along the Afghan border.

In another incident, at least 15 suspected insurgents were killed, while 13 others wounded on Saturday after military warplanes bombed targets strategic to Mehsud in the volatile region.

Pakistani intelligence officials believe the Taliban leader, Mehsud, and thousands of his men are hiding in the area.

The operations are aimed at demoralizing Mehsud's supporters who are already on the run across the lawless northwestern region where the army has opened several new fronts against insurgents.
