Reigning world light heavyweight champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan was stunned on the first day of boxing competition at the Beijing Olympics, losing to Tajikstan's Dzahkhon Kurbanov.

Kurbanov won by an 11-3 decision Saturday in the 81-kilogram class bout at Workers' Gymnasium in Beijing.

Russia's Artur Beterbiev, who won silver at last year's worlds, was an easy 15-3 winner over Sweden's Kennedy Katende.

Daugirdas Semiotas of Lithuania and Yerkebuian Shynaliyev of Kazakhstan, each bronze medallists at the worlds, drew each other in a first round bout. Shynaliyev prevailed 11-3.

Kenny Egan of Ireland routed Julius Jackson of Virgin Islands 22-2. Jackson is the son of the former pro boxing champion Julian Jackson.

Two-time and reigning world boxing champion Matvey Korobov of Russia easily won his opening bout in the 75-kilogram division on Saturday in Beijing.

The Russian disposed of Swede Naim Terbunja 18-6 to advance to the next round in the middleweight class.

Korobov has been unstoppable during the past three years. Aside from his two world titles, Korobov is also remembered for earning a final-round TKO at the 2003 worlds over Lucien Bute, who has since gone on to win the IBF world super middleweight championship as a professional fighting out of Montreal.

Defending Olympic champion Bakhtiyar Artayev of Kazakhstan also moved on to the next round after defeating Morocco's Said Rachidi 8-2. Artayev won bronze at the 2007 world championships in Chicago.

Russia's Sergiy Derevyanchenko, also a bronze winner at the worlds, was a 15-6 winner over Jianzheng Wang of China.

Shawn Estrada of East Los Angeles, Calif., outpointed Osyaldo Ezequiel Maderna of Argentina 10-2. At 23, Estrada is the oldest of the eight American boxers competing in Beijing.

Cuba's Emilio Correa Jr. won 17-4 over Jarrod Fletcher of Australia. Correa's father was Olympic welterweight champion in 1972, one of three boxing gold that began Cuba's dominance in amateur boxing.

Britain's James Degale dominated Egypt's Mohamed Hikal 13-4. After sending just one boxer to the 2004 Athens Games (Amir Khan), Britain has seven boxers entered in Beijing.

Russia is the only country which qualified boxers in all 11 weight categories. Cuba, China, Morocco and Kazakhstan each have 10 boxers.

Canada has just one boxer entered, Adam Trupish of Windsor, Ont. Trupish will fight Sunday in the 69-kg class against Bakhyt Sarsekbayev of Kazakhstan.

In other action in the 75-kg middleweight class:

* Georgios Gazis of Greece won 7-2 over Herry Saliku of Congo.
