Tajikistan has held parliamentary elections that are expected to strengthen the power of Emomali Rakhmon, the country's long-serving president.

More than half of the country's 3.5 million eligible voters had cast their ballots in the vote by midday on Sunday, the Central Elections Commission said.

Results are expected to begin trickling in from around the mountainous country by early Monday morning.

Rakhmon, who has ruled Tajikistan for almost the entire post-Soviet period, called for a free and fair poll as he cast his ballot in the capital, Dushanbe.

"Let us not break the law in today's election. This is an important political event for Tajikistan to promote economic and social life," he said.

"The more transparent and democratic the elections are, the higher Tajikistan's credibility will be on the world stage."

Analysts' predictions

Rakhmon, who became head of state in 1992, has been criticised by opponents for undermining civil rights, jailing dissidents and allowing only a token opposition.

But his governing People's Democratic Party, which now holds a majority of seats in the lower house of parliament, was expected to emerge victorious, analysts predicted.

Alidzhon Khakimov, a 59-year-old economist, told The Associated Press news agency that he voted for the governing party because he believes it is working to ensure a better future for Tajiks.

"This party is our well-being, our future.

"They have pure intentions, they have a pure heart and people believe in them"

"They are building the Rogun hydroelectric plant for us and will bring us to energy independence," he said, referring to a proposed plant that would allow the country meet its electricity needs and export power to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

But the poll also had the potential to increase the influence of the opposition Islamic Revival party.

Many of those voting in the capital said they backed the Islamic Revival Party, which currently has only two deputies in the 63-seat parliament.

"They have pure intentions, they have a pure heart and people believe in them," Badriddin Rustamov, an engineer, told The AP.

"I don't know the leader of the party, whom I've only seen on television, but I feel that I can trust him and he would do a better job."

I think National Democratic Party of Tajikistan (NDPT) would get the most votes, however, with not that kind of margin that they had, around 80%. I think they would have gotten around 45% of votes. Islamic party of Tajikistan would be the major rival to NDPT, cause more than 90% Muslim population. Social Democratic party and National Democratic party would have 10-20% of votes.

Other parties agreed that the election was fraud as well.

Anyhow, that was waste of time and money. If TJ was a more democratic country we would certainly see some kind of healthy competition and smart politics. So far, only one party rules the country.

I had alot f respects for Rahman, but not anymore. He is clearly and effectively pushing tajikistan to a disaster and dependency. I just hope people of tajikistan do something peacefully and make him respect the wishes of people and democratic values in tajikistan, that is the only way that can take tajikistan out of poverty and dependency to the russians and uzbekistan.

Well, it's nothing new: the man was running the banana republic since the Soviet era!!!
And now made it exactly the way he knows it: soviet style One party rules everything (which in reality he is a king, there's nothing above him and he's above everything and everybody!!!)
Country been run down and it's not gonna get any better as long as "the winners" of embarrassing and disgusting civil war running the place!!!
Even so called Opposition, Islamic Party was pretty much subdued to the will of the king, so it's just a farce!!!
And trust me: these people will not listen or respect the "non-violent" BS!!!
The way they come to power tells all!!!
Good luck to poor new generations who never seen any other different authority but this.

what do you think what is the general mode among the masses in the country? how do they see the way out of this problem? secondly, i hope that tajiks dont go for a violent option, because that will only bring disaster to the country and its people, we saw that last time. and we shouldnt forget that tajikistan has lots of enemies and they will do everything to get tajikistan in its knees by fueling a war in the country.

رهبر حزب نهضت اسلامی تاجیکستان می‌گوید مردم تاجیک از جنگهای داخلی سبق گرفته‌اند.

محی الدین کبیری گفت تأثیر ناآرامیهای قرقیزستان به وضعیت در تاجیکستان چندان عمیق نخواهد بود.

او روز جمعه، 9 آوریل بعد از ملاقاتش با مسئولان سفارت آمریکا در مقر این حزب به خبرنگاران گفت با توجه به تجربه جنگ شهروندی خود در سالهای 1990 تاجیکستان "علیه انقلابها واکسین گرفته است".

هرچند چارلز مارتین، مسئول بخش سیاسی سفارت آمریکا، بعد از ملاقاتش با مسئولان حزب نهضت اسلامی تاجیکستان گفت، در این ملاقات وضعیت کنونی در قرقیزستان مطرح شد، وی جزئیات صحبت را آشکار نکرد.

ولی آقای کبیری گفت، که به جز از مسائل قرقیزستان در این ملاقات با مسئولان سفارت آمریکا در شهر دوشنبه موضوع "تقلب در نتیجه‌گیری از انتخابات پارلمانی تاجیکستان و عواقب آن" نیز در میان گذاشته شد.

"تقدیر نظامهای خودکامه مشابه به باقییف خواهد بود"

محی‌الدین کبیری گفت، مسائل اصلی در ملاقات ناآرامیها در قرقیزستان و احتمال تأثیر آن به وضعیت کشورهای دیگر منطقه بود.

آقای کبیری با اظهار تاسف از تلفات جانی در میان ساکنان غیرنظامی قرقیزستان می‌گوید، که تأثیر حوادث اخیر قرقیزستان حتماً به وضع سیاسی و اجتماعی کشورهای همسایه احساس خواهد شد.

وی افزود: "بالاخره مردم در کشورهای منطقه نیز به نتیجه‌ای خواهند رسید، که دیر یا زود نظامهای خودکامه و فسادزده باید اشتباهاتشان را اصلاح کنند و یا عاقبت همشان مشابه به تقدیر پریزدنتها آقایف و باقی یف خواهد بود. از سوی دیگر برای مقامات کشورهای منطقه شاید این وضعیت یک درسی بشود، تا آنها به حرفهای مردم گوش بدهند."

ولی رهبر حزب نهضت اسلامی تاجیکستان می‌گوید، امید دارد مردم کشورهای منطقه از دست زدن به قانون‌شکنی خودداری کنند.
