And even if it HAD been more to the west than the African continent, when you say it lies to the west of Africa, it implies that it lies somewhere off the west coast, not "anywhere as long as it's more west than Africa." The correct thing to say would have been to say northwest of Africa, not to mention that the logical thing would be to compare its location in relation to the European continent, which it lies right next to, rather than Africa.
