I have a question about Tajik identity. I am in the USA, and I have a mixed background. My grandfather(Father's father) was a Tajik. I was told by someone that being a Tajik is paternal, so because my paternal grandfather was a Tajik, so am I. Is this true? None of my other grandparents are Tajik, but if it was, I would be very proud and would learn the language and culture(I did not have because my grandfather died before I was born.)
Is being Tajik paternal/patrilineal? and because my father's line is Tajik, am I also Tajik?

If you know, is it the same for Sarikoli.. the Xinjiang Tajiks of China? I know they are not exactly the same kind of Tajik, but does anyone know if they go by the same rule?
Welcome to the forum Harrgignos,
you rightfully question the situation of Sarikolis among Tajiks. My first and main answer is yes they are Tajiks and my second answer is no they aren´t Tajiks. They are Tajiks because they are from the same stock as all other Tajiks, too and have the same north-eastern Iranic and Tocharian ancestors as the rest of Tajiks such as Bactrians, Soghdians, Choresmians, Sacaes, Tocharians, Kushanas etc. and no they are not Tajiks by language, at least not modern Tajiks, since majority of Tajiks (85%) are native Persian-speakers. From their generical and ethnical background they are 100% Tajiks, just that they speak a very old Iranian language (Middle-Iranic, possibly a branch of Bactrian language). That´s why they have their own ''tribal'' name, ''Sarikol'' who speak Sarikoli. If the Sarikolis were originally Tocharians, Indo-eurpeaons of Kentum-group, a group close related to Germanspeakers, Romanic speakers, Latin, etc. they became Iranized through many centuries and in fact do nowhere differ from other Tajiks.
Yes, you are a Tajik. Only males can spread their gens, not women. Agha Khan is also known to be a Tajik or Iranian but all his maternal ancestors, from today to the 19th century where non-Iranians.
