National Museum of Iran spends “A Night with Shahnameh” E-mail

Tehran Times Culture Desk
TEHRAN -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Ferdowsi a poet who has created historical vigilance by writing Shahnameh.

Speaking at the ceremony entitled “A Night with Shahnameh” in commemoration of Ferdowsi at the National Museum of Iran on Thursday, Ahmadinejad made a speech on the author of the masterpiece.

Ferdowsi recognized the historical circumstances of his time and revived Persian identity by writing Shahnameh and innoculated humanity against ignorance, he mentioned.

He called Ferdowsi a monotheistic person who revived pursuit of justice and versified the truth in simple but elegant language.

“The Iranian nation is the only nation which propagates justice and freedom throughout history and Iranians have a weighty responsibility to publicize these concepts around the world,” he added.

The Persian empire was not formed by force and there is even evidence that various nations annexed themselves to the Persian Empire in order to benefit from Persian culture, he mentioned.

He went on to say that Persian culture should be globalized and that Iranian culture goes far beyond the boundaries of a single country.

Iran holds several national and international exhibitions nationwide and in other countries on the occasion of the registration of the Shahnameh millennium on UNESCO’s 2010 calendar of events.

Scholars at the University of Cambridge wrote a book on Shahnameh which will be released by I. B. Tauris & Co., Ltd. Publications in the near future.

Entitled “Epic of the Persian Kings: The Shahnameh of Ferdowsi”, the book is written by Charles Melville, Barbara Brend, Dick Davis and Firuza Abullaeva. In Germany, the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin will play host to an exhibition on Shahnameh from November 18 to March 15.

The museum, a subdivision of the Pergamon Museum, hosts a permanent exhibit of artwork that pertains to the Middle East from Egypt to Iran.

The Iranian cultural attaché to Berlin Abolfazl Rahnama announced Iran’s cooperation with the museum for holding the exhibit during his visit with the museum’s director Stefan Weber.
